Gum health warning signs patients should not ignore

Learn the gum symptoms that deserve attention, from bleeding and swelling to recession and bad breath.

Before you act: Dental symptoms need personal evaluation. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, trauma, fever, or breathing difficulty.

Healthy gums are usually firm, comfortable, and easy to clean. When gums bleed, swell, or pull away from the teeth, the mouth is often asking for a change in daily care or a professional evaluation.

Bleeding is common, but not “normal”

Occasional bleeding can happen if a patient changes flossing habits or brushes aggressively. Bleeding that returns often, appears with gentle brushing, or comes with tenderness should be checked. It may be a sign of gingivitis, early periodontal disease, medication effects, or another health factor.

Swelling and tenderness

Gum swelling can trap more plaque, making the area harder to clean. Warmth, pus, a bad taste, or pain when biting should be evaluated promptly because infection may require urgent treatment.

Recession and sensitivity

Gum recession can expose root surfaces, which may feel sensitive to cold air or drinks. Causes can include brushing pressure, tooth position, gum inflammation, grinding, or previous periodontal disease.

Bad breath that does not improve

Persistent bad breath can come from tongue coating, dry mouth, gum pockets, cavities, diet, smoking, or medical conditions. A dental visit helps separate simple hygiene issues from problems needing treatment.

What patients can do this week

Use a soft toothbrush, slow down while brushing the gumline, clean between teeth daily, and avoid scrubbing. If symptoms persist, schedule a dental review rather than trying multiple products at once.
